Spotify fake payment failure email and text scam

Impersonating: Spotify

What is this scam?

Phishing emails and texts impersonating Spotify claim a recent payment has failed and the recipient's Premium subscription will be cancelled within 48 hours unless billing details are updated. Links lead to convincing fake Spotify login pages that steal account credentials and credit card details. Security researchers flagged a rise in Spotify-branded phishing targeting UK users in late April 2026.

Example scam message

Spotify: We were unable to process your recent payment of £10.99. Your Premium subscription will be cancelled in 48 hours unless you update your billing details: spotify-billing-update.xyz/account

Red flags to look out for

  • Spotify never cancels your subscription within 48 hours of a failed payment — they retry several times first.
  • The link goes to an unofficial domain, not spotify.com.
  • The email may arrive even if your Spotify payment is up to date.
  • Urgency and a short deadline are classic pressure tactics.
